MANPOWER CAPABILITY Local 198 represents over 2200 highly skilled plumbers, pipefitters, welders, and HVAC service technicians in the Baton Rouge area. In addition to our members, Local 198 has access to additional skilled labor through our International Union, which is nearly 300,000 strong. CONTRACTOR BASE We currently have a SIGNATORY CONTRACTOR BASE that numbers in excess of 40 including, the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA), Air Conditioning Refrigeration Contractors Association (ARCA), and Independents, who perform all facets of construction and maintenance in the Mechanical Contracting Industry. Local 198 supplies the manpower to meet the varied demands of these employers. Local 198 and its Signatory Contractors currently invest over $275,000 annually in our training programs for apprentices and journeypersons. This joint investment allows us to employ experienced, technical instructors and maintain state-of-the –art training facilities which utilize the latest technology and equipment. APPRENTICES
Our apprentices are required to undergo an intensive five-year apprenticeship training program which mandates 1,150 hours of classroom instruction and 10,000 hours of on-the-job training work experience in the field. But, education does not end here. JOURNEYPERSONS
Journeypersons continuously upgrade their education by taking courses which emphasize developing technology and specialty areas, including Orbital Welding Medical Gas Installation (which requires high purity silver soldering and brazing), Blue Print Interpretation, and Layout Design. TESTING & CERTIFICATION
Our instructors have earned the credentials to CERTIFY journeypersons in accordance with industry codes and standards in several specialty areas, including Welding, Back-Flow Prevention, and Valve Repair and Maintenance. SAFETY TRAINING Local 198 knows safety is also an important part of our trade. We have mandatory Health and Safety Training Programs which cover key OSHA standards, including Hazwoper Training, OSHA / 500 (10 hours), Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Welding Safety, Lead and Asbestos Awareness, Climbing Safety, Trenching / Excavation. Our skills and safety training are fortified by quality control programs utilized by our Signatory Contractors at the project site. All of these efforts allow us to deliver quality work on time and on budget. COLLECTIVE BARGAINING Another key to our success is a solid partnership between our membership and our contractors. Dependable competent craftspersons deserve good wages. Our union and contractors negotiate fair collective bargaining agreements that assume our members receive good wages and fair treatment, including health insurance, pensions, and other benefits. This harmonious relationship helps to ensure that our customers get what they’re paying for and deserve.
