Apprenticeship Training, Advanced Journeyperson Training, Quality Control, Experience Dedication, Respect for Workers and, most importantly Respect for our Customers – This is how we remain competitive in our field.
If you know anything about the mechanical contracting industry, you know that is a serious business. WE can’t afford to take chances or cut corners. We do it RIGHT, and we do it RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

Local 198 and its Signatory Contractors currently invest over $275,000 annually in our training programs for apprentices and journeypersons. This joint investment allows us to employ experienced, technical instructors and maintain state-of-the –art training facilities which utilize the latest technology and equipment.

Our apprentices are required to undergo an intensive five-year apprenticeship training program which mandates 1,150 hours of classroom instruction and 10,000 hours of on-the-job training work experience in the field. But, education does not end here.

Journeypersons continuously upgrade their education by taking courses which emphasize developing technology and specialty areas, including Orbital Welding Medical Gas Installation (which requires high purity silver soldering and brazing), Blue Print Interpretation, and Layout Design.

Our instructors have earned the credentials to CERTIFY journeypersons in accordance with industry codes and standards in several specialty areas, including Welding, Back-Flow Prevention, and Valve Repair and Maintenance.

Local 198 knows safety is also an important part of our trade. We have mandatory Health and Safety Training Programs which cover key OSHA standards, including Hazwoper Training, OSHA / 500 (10 hours), Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Welding Safety, Lead and Asbestos Awareness, Climbing Safety, Trenching / Excavation.

Our commitment to training translates into quality craftsmanship and productivity on the job. Our skills and safety training are fortified by quality control programs utilized by our Signatory Contractors at the project site. All of these efforts allow us to deliver quality work on time and on budget.

Another key to our success is a solid partnership between our membership and our contractors. Dependable competent craftspersons deserve good wages. Our union and contractors negotiate fair collective bargaining agreements that assume our members receive good wages and fair treatment, including health insurance, pensions, and other benefits. This harmonious relationship helps to ensure that our customers get what they’re paying for and deserve.
